Corona Virus (COVID-19)
Corona keeps the world in suspense. There is still no end in sight to the Corona pandemic that has been raging since the beginning of 2020. Now, mutations of the Corona virus are increasingly spreading and influencing the infection pattern, causing the recently declining infection figures in Germany to stagnate.
The novel Corona virus is a new strain of the virus that was first found in humans. The disease caused by the virus as a result of droplet infection is called COVID-19.
The majority of people suffering from COVID-19 show mild to moderate symptoms and recover. No special medical treatment is necessary. The mortality rate of patients is relatively low, but there are significant national differences.
Which symptoms indicate an illness?
According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the incubation period, i.e. the time between infection and outbreak of the disease, is estimated at 1 to 14 days. According to current knowledge, people who have become infected with the novel coronavirus are already contagious during the incubation period. The most well-known symptoms of a coronavirus infection to date include
- dry cough
- fever
- sniffles
- odor/taste disorders
- pneumonia
According to the RKI, other COVID-19 symptoms can include sore throat, shortness of breath, headaches and aching limbs, loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea.
How can you protect yourself from an infection?
The consistent implementation of the required distance regulations and basic hygiene including hand hygiene in all areas of everyday life have proven to be the best possible protective measures.
Virologists and the RKI urgently recommend wearing a protective mask in public places, as this hinders the release of pathogen-containing droplets from the nasopharyngeal cavity of the wearer and primarily serves to protect the other person (foreign protection). At the same time, it can protect the wearer from absorbing droplets or splashes via the mouth or nose, e.g. from the nasopharynx of the opposite person (self-protection).
